In order to provide students with opportunities to deeply understand a topic, a teacher must consider what it means to "deeply" understand a concept or skill. One way to think about this is to organize how we think about and use concepts into a hierarchy of tasks that range from less to more complex. There are different (though similar) ways of doing this. Resources related to these different approaches are collected here.
- Bloom's Taxonomy - The most common hierarchy of learning tasks is Bloom's Taxonomy.
- Webb's Depth of Knowledge - This is another hierarchy used by the Rhode Island Department of Education to develop assessment items for the NECAP.
